Certified Colombian coffee: Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade & organic
Sustainability certifications are increasingly a condition of doing business, not a nice-to-have. Here is what the main coffee certifications mean and how to source them from Colombia. Expocafé offers certified coffees across these programs.
Rainforest Alliance & UTZ
Rainforest Alliance certifies farms against environmental, social and economic criteria; UTZ — now part of the Rainforest Alliance program — focuses on good farming practice and transparent supply chains. Many roasters and retail brands now require one of these for shelf placement.
Fairtrade
Fairtrade supports a minimum price and a community premium paid to grower organisations, aimed at strengthening smallholder livelihoods. It resonates strongly with consumers and is widely requested by ethically positioned brands.
Organic
Certified-organic coffee is grown without synthetic inputs and traced through a certified chain of custody. Note the destination scheme — NOP for the United States, EU for Europe and JAS for Japan — and confirm your supplier can certify to it.
What to request
- The relevant certificate(s) for the program and the current period.
- Transaction documentation (e.g. Fairtrade or RA transaction details).
- Origin and traceability records back to the cooperative and region.

Which coffee certifications do buyers ask for most?

What is the difference between NOP, EU and JAS organic?
They are the organic standards for the US (NOP), Europe (EU) and Japan (JAS). Coffee must be certified to the scheme of its destination market.
Can certified coffee also be regional or specialty?
