What makes Colombian coffee special

A Q-grader cupping Colombian coffee in a quality lab

Few origins enjoy the recognition of Colombian coffee. Behind the reputation sits a combination of geography, method and institutions worth understanding when you sell it.

Terroir and altitude

Colombia's coffee grows on steep Andean and Sierra Nevada slopes, broadly 1,200–2,000 metres, under a tropical climate with volcanic soils. High altitude slows cherry development and concentrates sweetness and acidity — the foundation of a clean, balanced cup. Two harvest seasons mean fresh Colombian coffee is available much of the year.

100% washed Arabica

Colombia produces only Arabica, almost all of it fully washed. Selective hand-picking of ripe cherries followed by washed processing removes defects and protects clarity — which is why Colombian coffee is the world's benchmark washed Arabica.

The institutions behind the cup

Colombian coffee is supported by an unusual institutional framework: the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros protects the Café de Colombia origin, while Cenicafé drives the research behind varieties and quality. The grower cooperative network organises hundreds of thousands of smallholders and gives them a route to market.

The cooperative model

That model is also why traceability is achievable at scale. Sourcing through the cooperatives — as Expocafé does — connects buyers to the communities behind their coffee, with the transparency the modern market expects. Talk to us about bringing genuine Colombian coffee to your roastery.

Frequently asked questions

Is all Colombian coffee Arabica?

Yes. Colombia produces 100% Arabica, and almost all of it is fully washed — the variety and process behind its clean, balanced reputation.

What is the FNC?

The Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (National Federation of Coffee Growers) represents Colombia's coffee farmers and protects the Café de Colombia origin and its quality standards worldwide.

Why is Colombian coffee available much of the year?

Colombia has two harvest periods — a main crop and the mid-year 'mitaca' — so fresh Colombian coffee is available across much of the calendar.
